The Holy Land and Jordan
Beryl Harrold reports on the November meeting of the Women’s Fellowship
In November revd Martin Davis came to speak to us about the trip he led
to Israel and Jordan last May. Gordon Isaacs also came to our meeting and spoke about several of the places they visited. We have enjoyed reading his articles in the Harefield Month. Martin showed us many fascinating slides and a very interesting book entitled “In the steps of Jesus” by Peter Walker. We would be very pleased to welcome Martin and Gordon to another meeting to hear more about their marvellous experiences.
History Society
The Society does not meet in December so the next get-together will be
on Monday 26^th January 2009 when the guest speaker will be the renowned local historian, Eileen Bowlt. Her subject will be ‘Breakspear House’. This old historic Harefield building is currently undergoing conversion into private apartments so it will be good to know what went on there before this modernisation. Tea, coffee and biscuits afterwards as usual. The library is due to be back in proper commission on December 17^th so
hopefully the entrance will be as before.
First Friday Lunches
From Mel Calam
The December one will be as normal but it has been agreed to try
something different for the lunch on January 2^nd . Tea and coffee will
be supplied in the usual way but because of the Christmas and New Year
‘stocking up’ of food perhaps if anyone has leftovers they could bring
them along for a ‘Pot Luck’ lunch. It might help our supporters to clear
their fridges and larders and to get rid of the remains of that 24lbs
turkey! Please do not buy food specially to bring something along as
this will go against what we are trying to do. Like the idea? I hope so.

Hill House Allotment Site
Michael Dent, the Site Sectretasry tells us...
The site has, for the second year running, been awarded the cup for the
best small site (under 50 plots) in the annual Hillingdon Allotment
competition. Nine plot-holders were placed in the top 50 in the Borough with Alan Ellingham (first) and Audrey and Michael Kilmartin (second) receiving special awards. The award was made at a ceremony in the Council Chamber at the Civic Centre, Uxbridge, on 12th November. In making the presentations Councillor Sandra Jenkins, Council Member for the Environment, commended both the award winners and all Hillingdon
plot holders who help to make allotments so successful here. Healthy
Hillingdon starts here!! We were all delighted to have this recognition
of our skills and efforts. Over 25% of our plot holders are now women, reflecting a welcome trend across the UK.
Life & Work in Papua, New Guinea
Beryl Harrold reports on the November meeting of the Women’s Fellowship
We were very pleased to welcome Janet Eden to our November meeting.
Janet’s younger daughter Kate was very interested in foreign languages
and had studied French and German. During her gap year she met Phil
King, her future husband. They have been living in Ukerumpa, a village
high up in the mountains of Papua, New Guinea in a Translation Centre.William Cameron Townsend founded “Camp Wycliffe” in 1934 as a
linguistics training school. By 1942 it had grown into two partner
organisations: Wycliffe Bible Translators and the Summer Institute of
Linguistics. SIL’s basic programme revolves around techniques for
learning to speak unwritten languages, studying phonological and
grammatical structures, understanding the cultural context and
translating the Bible. As Wycliffe organisations multiplied, the corporation reorganised in the early 1990s. Wycliffe International was created to facilitate the multiplying opportunities for partnerships with organisations worldwide on behalf of Bible translation and related ministries. Papua New Guinea occupies the eastern part of the world’s second largest island and is prey to volcanic activity, earthquakes and tidal waves. Many tribes live in the isolated mountainous interior and have little contact with each other, let alone the outside world. The country has strong ties with its southern neighbour, Australia, which administered the territory until independence in 1975. The major religions are Christianity and indigenous beliefs. Kate and Phil have a nice house and two little boys. With no roads, all their supplies are flown in by small Mission Fellowship planes. The native people live in huts on stilts, the women do all the work and tend the gardens. Some of the people practise ancestor worship. We were very interested to see all the pictures, photos and crafts which Janet brought along to show us.

Angel Tidings…
The little boy was to be an angel in the Christmas play and his one line
was: "Behold, I bring you good tidings." He asked what tidings were and
his mother explained that the word meant news. On the night of the play,
the youngster had stage fright and, after a long silence, blurted out:
"Hey, have I got news for you!"
